Size matters...
Responsible drinking - the size debate
Responsible drinking is hot on the agenda with the government keen for their new initiatives to be taken seriously and there are signs that both consumers and retailers are taking steps to respond and create greater awareness and options. There are now a considerable number of lower alcohol wines on the market, which provide all the flavour without the alcohol content. The ever popular Pinot Grigio and Pink Zinfandel/Grenache are great examples of lower alcohol styles of wines.
Just as consumers don't always want a highly alcoholic wine, many don't want an oversized glass. Outlets can respond to this by giving consumers the option of the size of glass they order. In fact promoting smaller sizes either 125ml or 175ml can have a very positive knock on effect for your business for two reasons;
- Firstly it makes your wine offer look better value and more accessible, as well as encouraging customers to trade up to more premium wines.
- Secondly, ordering another glass of 125ml or 175ml is much more likely than 250ml which will give a greater spend per head and cash margin
